97,000 pounds! – the weight of about 22 US automobiles – removed from Crystal and Loon Lakes
2015 Carp Removal
The common carp and bullhead are bottom feeders that have compounded the lakes’ issues with nitrogen and phosphorous. In a combined effort of Crystal Waters Project and the Crystal and Loon Lakes Recreation Association, 97,000 pounds of carp were netted and removed from Crystal and Loon Lakes. The carp were then taken to a farmers’ field and buried.
2018 Update
With contributions from a “Carpe Carpium” campaign, another round of carp removal took place in 2018. This time there were far fewer bottom feeders to remove, and only about 8,000 pounds were seined.
